Life in the Slow Lane

Live oaks, palmettos, and random vines and bushes. Our camper has been surrounded by these for the last month in Florida. (As well as RVs full of “white hairs” as the locals call the out-of-state snow birds.) The Escape Pod or Tardis (Greg and I are still settling on a name for our camper) sits on its gravel pad. A short walk away over the dunes lie the white sand beaches and blue-green water of the Gulf of Mexico.

Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, Florida would be a treat at another time of the year. January is not ideal. It has been cold, rainy and overcast. Greg did manage two longish bike rides and when the rain stopped we had two walks on the beach. We did see a spectacular sunset on a nearly deserted beach. Our kind of experience!

On the 12th it will be two months since we downsized, sold out, said goodbye and left Maryland. We've spent the time in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. Tomorrow we head west. We had planned to visit New Orleans and Cajun country. Now we want sun and drier weather. So we will head for the Texas Gulf Coast and South Padre Island National Seashore. We can dry camp on the beach for $8 a night.

I have been keeping a written journal and posting on Facebook. From now on I will concentrate mostly on the blog. I would like to go back and record some impressions and photos from the previous two months besides updating where we go. Check in from time to time. I want to share more than just travel commentary. This crazy, quirky land of ours inspires me!

Enjoy some photos from Destin, Florida!
